Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these." - Matthew 19:14
What is DIG?
DIG or Children Delighting in God is a children's ministry that incorporates many of the aspects of corporate worship that adults and teens at BeFree enjoy, but on a developmentally and spiritually appropriate level for children. It includes Bible reading, an opportunity to respond and reflect through art and writing, worship through song, and prayer and scripture memory through music and repetition.
Trust in the Lord and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture. Take delight in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart. - Psalms 37:3-4
When we delight in God, we show Him that we love and enjoy being in His presence. DIG is a special time that the children of BeFree are able to be captivated by the love that God has for all His children, and respond to that love and call.
When is DIG? What ages is DIG for?
Children ages 4 through 9 (fourth grade) will be excused to attend DIG after the first set of worship songs during the regular worship gathering. While the adults and teens are upstairs learning, the children will be downstairs learning and growing spiritually as well. Children ages 4-5 meet in the Childcare Center on the parking lot level, and students in Kindergarten through age 9 meet on the lower level in two classes.
What curriculum will be used?
DIG teachers will be using The Jesus Storybook Bible for preschoolers through first graders and the NIV Student Bible for second through fourth graders. Children will be memorizing scripture using music from Seeds of Faith. A new scripture/song will be taught each month, and teachers will collect children's reflection pages to assemble a portfolio for display at the end of the year.
What will the children be doing?
During DIG, the children will begin by listening to a Bible story. Next, to facilitate their understanding, they will be asked to respond with wondering questions (i.e., I wonder how Adam and Eve felt living in the garden?). Then, they will think about the scripture and come up with an art and writing reflection page to share their understanding of God's Word. Reflection activities are based on developmental level, and could include drawing, painting, clay, play dough, or gluing on cut-outs, as examples. When finished, the children will have the opportunity to share their reflections. Finally, teachers will review and reinforce the monthly scripture using music from Seeds of Faith. A small snack will be served, and there will be time for prayer and worship.
